From breathtaking hikes and scenic drives to authentic local experiences, this itinerary is perfect for anyone looking to immerse themselves in the raw beauty of Norway’s Arctic. Pack your bags, and get ready for a journey that will leave you speechless. Let’s explore Senja!

Day 1: Tromsø - Fjordgård

Day 1: Tromsø - Fjordgård

You arrive in beautiful Tromsø after a flight of one and a half to two hours from Oslo. The descent into Tromsø is sure to give you butterflies in your stomach. As you approach, you’ll see the Arctic Cathedral and several iconic landmarks in Tromsø.

Once you’ve landed, head west toward some of the most stunning peaks and dramatic landscapes Norway has to offer. The drive from Tromsø to Brensfjord ferry terminal takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The ferry from Brensfjord to Botnhamn takes 45 minutes. Make sure to buy waffles with jam on the ferry and enjoy them during the crossing!

After arriving in Botnhamn, you’re close to many fjords, with the first stop being Fjordgård, where you park to see the historic mountains "Segla" and "Hesten."

If you’re hungry before or after the hike, stop by "Segla Pub and Grill." Both the fish and chips and the popular burger are highly recommended!

The hike to Segla and Hesten is on relatively easy terrain, but there are some rocky and sandy parts, so take care. At the top, it’s steep at the cliffs, and the drop is significant. You can do both peaks in one day, but that requires returning to the starting point after completing one hike.

The view from Segla is breathtaking over the fjords, but the best view of Segla’s unique shape is from Hesten.

When the hike is done, you can enjoy a wonderful sauna at the harbor and take a swim in the turquoise sea. Feel free to bring shampoo and conditioner to take a proper shower before continuing your journey.

You can spend the night at the harbor or park anywhere along the road—it’s all free to choose from here.

Day 2: Fjordgård - Skaland

Day 2: Fjordgård - Skaland

The next day, head toward Skaland, a peaceful and picturesque village. Skaland is home to the most beautiful hike on Senja, which you absolutely must experience. It’s a favorite of Queen Sonja herself.

Park at the Joker Skaland parking lot and follow the marked trail toward "Husfjellet." The trail starts on a gravel path for a short distance before leading through a small forest. It then flattens out over a marshland before the climb to the top begins. The ascent is steady, with small plateaus where you can take breaks.

The view from the top is indescribable. To one side, you’ll see “The Devil’s Teeth,” while to the other, you’ll overlook Bergsøyan and Hamn in Senja. Pack lunch or dinner and something to drink for the top—it’s highly recommended. Make sure to go on a sunny, clear day to fully enjoy the spectacular views.

When the hike is done and you’re warm and sweaty, continue driving toward the edge of Skaland. Keep driving until you start wondering, "Are we going the right way?" Then you’ll reach Bøvær Beach—the most beautiful beach on Senja (along with Ersfjord Beach). Camping with a motorhome is unfortunately no longer allowed here, but enjoy your time at the beach and prepare a delicious dinner while taking in the midnight sun. It doesn’t get better than this.

Overnight: Drive toward Hamn in Senja and park at "Kroken Beach," the second beach after Bøvær, with a fantastic view and the midnight sun.

Day 3: Skaland - Hamn i Senja

Day 3: Skaland - Hamn i Senja

f you’ve brought a SUP, kayak, or canoe, this is an amazing place to paddle. Hamn in Senja is just around the corner, with Bergsøyan waiting for you right off the shore. Hamn in Senja is called "Norway in Miniature" because of its varied landscapes.

Park at the hotel in Hamn and book a guided midnight sun kayak tour (3 hours) at the reception. You might be lucky enough to see seals, whales, orcas, and various bird species during the tour.

Once booked, take a hike to "Sukkertoppen." Walk back along the road toward Skaland until you find the marked trail to Sukkertoppen. The hike starts off easy and is suitable for children. If you want to reach the very top, there is a short but steep climbing section. It’s not recommended for small children, but it’s manageable for adults.

After the hike, return to the hotel and enjoy a jacuzzi session. The view stretches out across the ocean, making it a perfect spot for the midnight sun. It’s advisable to book the jacuzzi at the same time as the kayak tour since it can get busy during peak season.

It’s also possible to rent a boat, with or without a skipper, to experience the rich wildlife of the sea and sky.

Day 4: Hamn in Senja - Torsken - Gryllefjord

Day 4: Hamn in Senja - Torsken - Gryllefjord

Next, head to the charming village of Torsken, known for its historic fishing heritage and stunning surroundings.

After a few days of hikes and elevation gains, today’s hike to Torskefjord is more relaxed, ideal for soaking in nature without overexertion.

When the hike is complete, dine at Torsken Brygge, a cozy restaurant serving traditional dishes with a modern twist, all made from local ingredients. Try the "tørrfisk" (dried fish) as a starter! Afterward, visit Torsken Church, a small wooden church from 1784, and explore the old fish racks that bear witness to Torsken’s rich fishing history.

For overnight stays, park at the harbor, where you’ll find power, showers, toilets, a jacuzzi, gray water dumping, and water refilling services for a small fee. If you’d prefer not to stay here, continue toward Gryllefjord and find a peaceful spot for the night among the towering mountains.

Day 5: Gryllefjord - Hofsøy

Day 5: Gryllefjord - Hofsøy

Head to southern Senja and Hofsøy, where the landscape becomes greener and flatter. Take a tranquil hike to Hofsøyvarden and enjoy magnificent views of the sea and surrounding islands.

Visit Hofsøy Bygdetun, an open-air museum offering insights into life on Senja in the past.

Bring a primus to cook dinner on the summit—don’t forget the campfire cinnamon rolls!
